About this spot
DAY HIKE · KATHMANDU RETURN · NO OVERNIGHT REQUIRED
Research checked: 2026-09-15. Suggested plan for Nepali travellers, not a tour booking or live route-status report.
A quieter rural outing ending at a living Buddhist pilgrimage site. The walk is as much about fields and settlements as the destination, making it a useful alternative to the long forest climbs of Shivapuri or Phulchowki. Namo Buddha's stupa and monastery are places of worship, not just photo stops. [namobuddha] [namobuddha-walk]
ROUTE AND EFFORT
Route: Dhulikhel → Kavre villages / farmland → Namo Buddha pilgrimage area → road return to Kathmandu
Altitude: Around 1,750 m at the Namo Buddha monastery ridge; local approach paths vary.
Walking: Allow 3–5 hours one way plus time at the destination. NTB describes around three hours; a local operator allows four to five. [namobuddha] [namobuddha-walk]
Difficulty: Easy–moderate countryside walking with steps and a final climb; still several hours on your feet.
Transport allowance: Allow 1½–2½ hours Kathmandu–Dhulikhel and 2–3 hours for a return from Namo Buddha, depending on the road and connections.
DAY 1 - KATHMANDU TO THE TRAIL AND BACK
Times are planning windows. Traffic, gate hours, weather and the slowest walker determine the day; shorten the route if needed.
06:30–09:00 · Kathmandu to Dhulikhel
Travel east through the Bhaktapur–Banepa corridor. Eat breakfast and confirm your walking start and Namo Buddha pickup with a local contact.
09:00–13:30 · Walk through the countryside
Follow the selected route through Kavre settlements and farmland. Allow for lunch and rests; take care on shared-road sections and leave crops undisturbed.
Early afternoon · Namo Buddha
Visit the stupa and any open monastery areas quietly. Follow dress, shoe and photography instructions, and allow worshippers space.
By mid-afternoon · Begin the road return
Meet your vehicle or use a locally confirmed connection toward Panauti / Banepa. Build the return around actual available transport rather than waiting until evening to ask.
Evening · Arrive back in Kathmandu
Keep a traffic allowance. An optional onward walk to Panauti would extend the day and is not part of this itinerary.
GETTING THERE AND HOME
Buses toward Dhulikhel / Banepa can reduce cost, but confirm the current boarding point and connection for Namo Buddha's return before departure. A group car with different drop-off and pickup points is simpler. Avoid driving yourself to Dhulikhel unless you have a plan to collect the vehicle.
SHORTER / ALTERNATIVE PLAN
An out-and-back to Dhulikhel is considerably longer: NTB's hill-stations page describes an approximately eight-hour round-trip walk. Use the one-way plan for a more relaxed day. [nagarkot]
BEFORE YOU GO
Arrange food in a settlement or bring a packed lunch; monastery meals are not automatically available to visitors. Carry water and cash for food, transport and any posted entry charges. Budget remains blank because no comparable Nepali all-in cost was verified.
Check weather and local access on the day. Take water, food, grippy shoes, a charged phone and an offline route. Keep a daylight margin and bring all rubbish home. Maps below locate the area; they are not trail-navigation tracks.
