The Nagarjun section of the park offers a compact forest outing above the urban valley. The attraction is a proper climb to Jamacho's monastery and viewpoint without a long drive out of Kathmandu. [jamacho]
ROUTE AND EFFORT
Route: Fulbari Gate near Balaju Bypass → Nagarjun forest → Jamacho Gumba / viewpoint → Fulbari Gate
Altitude: About 2,100 m; published summit values vary around 2,100–2,130 m. [jamacho]
Walking: Allow 3–5 hours return. A common route is described as 4–5 km each way, so do not mistake a one-way distance for the whole outing. [jamacho]
Difficulty: Moderate: a sustained stepped climb despite the short approach from the city.
Transport allowance: Allow 20–45 minutes from central Kathmandu to Fulbari Gate in lighter traffic, and longer at busy times.
DAY 1 - KATHMANDU TO THE TRAIL AND BACK
Times are planning windows. Traffic, gate hours, weather and the slowest walker determine the day; shorten the route if needed.
07:00–08:00 · Kathmandu to Fulbari Gate
Travel toward Balaju Bypass. Confirm the gate is open, register and buy entry before beginning. Ask for the day's latest exit time.
08:00–10:30 · Climb through Nagarjun forest
Follow the authorized foot trail at a steady pace, stopping to regroup at junctions. Give yourself the full ascent allowance rather than racing the stairs.
10:30–11:15 · Jamacho break
Rest near the monastery and viewpoint, eat your packed food and enjoy the valley or mountains if clear. Follow any access limits around the shrine or tower.
11:15–13:30 · Return to Fulbari Gate
Descend the same trail carefully. Exit within the park's permitted hours and keep your ticket until out.
Afternoon · Return to Kathmandu
Collect your vehicle or connect with local transport near Balaju. Allow for traffic and a lunch stop if desired.
GETTING THERE AND HOME
Use a local bus toward Balaju / Machhapokhari and confirm the remaining walk to Fulbari Gate, or share a taxi directly to the entrance. The same-gate return makes parking and pickup simpler than a traverse.
PARK ENTRY FOR NEPALI VISITORS
The park lists NPR 100 for Nepali citizens per person, per day, per entry; this is entry only, not a trip budget. Carry Nepali identification and cash, and confirm the rate at the gate. [park-fees]
Use authorized gates/routes, retain your ticket and leave before sunset. No bathing in park water sources. Meat, alcohol, cigarettes, lighters and loudspeakers are prohibited. Confirm opening and last-entry times before leaving Kathmandu. [park-rules]
SHORTER / ALTERNATIVE PLAN
If the climb feels too much, turn back on the same authorized trail. Do not substitute an unapproved forest entrance for a closed gate.
BEFORE YOU GO
Bring water and snacks; shops at the top should not be assumed. A short drive does not make the uphill walk effortless. Muddy steps can be slippery after rain.
Check weather and local access on the day. Take water, food, grippy shoes, a charged phone and an offline route. Keep a daylight margin and bring all rubbish home. Maps below locate the area; they are not trail-navigation tracks.
