Explore Kathmandu’s UNESCO-listed royal square, Kumari Ghar, Hanuman Dhoka Palace and centuries-old Newar temples in Basantapur.
About this spot
Kathmandu Durbar Square is a UNESCO World Heritage landmark in Basantapur and one of the best places to experience the history of old Kathmandu, Nepal. The former royal complex brings together Hanuman Dhoka Palace, Kumari Ghar, traditional Newar courtyards and temples associated with the Malla and Shah eras. Look for landmarks such as Kasthamandap, Taleju Temple and the image of Kal Bhairav while exploring the living square. Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for softer light and a more atmospheric heritage walk. Dress respectfully around shrines and check current museum hours and entry fees before visiting.
