Nagarkot Ridge to Nala Day Hike
A one-way countryside hike from Nagarkot toward Nala: about 3½–5 hours walking, with terraces, forest and a planned vehicle return via Banepa.

A good choice when open countryside and views matter more than a summit. NTB identifies the southbound Nagarkot–Nala–Banepa walking connection. Decide the exact start and exit before setting off: the wider region has several similar-sounding ridge walks. [nagarkot]
ROUTE AND EFFORT
Route: Nagarkot → selected village / ridge route → Nala → road transfer via Banepa to Kathmandu
Altitude: Nagarkot ridge approximately 2,175 m; starting elevations differ between the town, viewpoints and homestays. [nagarkot]

Difficulty: Easy–moderate to moderate: rolling terrain, descent and some climbs; not an entirely downhill stroll.
Transport allowance: Allow 1½–2½ hours from Kathmandu to Nagarkot and 1½–2½ hours home from the Nala / Banepa side. Bus changes and traffic can take longer.
DAY 1 - KATHMANDU TO THE TRAIL AND BACK
Times are planning windows. Traffic, gate hours, weather and the slowest walker determine the day; shorten the route if needed.
06:00–08:30 · Kathmandu to Nagarkot
Travel early for the clearer part of the morning. This is not a guaranteed sunrise schedule. Confirm whether your trail starts in town or at a homestay outside it.
08:30–09:00 · View stop and route check
Take breakfast and settle the route to Nala with a local guide or knowledgeable host. Agree on the pickup point before walking.
09:00–13:30 · Walk to Nala
Follow your selected forest and village route, pausing for water and food. The community route includes uphill steps and road sections; allow extra time for longer stops.
Early afternoon · Nala break
Visit accessible public areas. If ending at the monastery, confirm visiting hours first; Community Homestay Network currently lists Saturday 10:00–16:00 visits. Entry cannot be assumed on other days. [nala-community]
Afternoon · Nala / Banepa to Kathmandu
Meet the prearranged vehicle, or confirm a local connection to Banepa and onward transport before the final bus. Walking all the way to Banepa adds distance beyond this plan.
GETTING THERE AND HOME
This is a one-way hike: do not leave your only vehicle in Nagarkot without a retrieval plan. A shared vehicle that drops at Nagarkot and collects in Nala is convenient. With buses, confirm connections via Bhaktapur for the approach and Banepa for the return; no live timetable is verified.
SHORTER / ALTERNATIVE PLAN
Sankhu → Nagarkot is a separate uphill day hike, usually around 4–6 walking hours, followed by road transport home. It passes a different set of villages and should replace, not be added to, the Nala plan. [sankhu]
BEFORE YOU GO
Mountain views can disappear in haze even during the dry season. Carry cash for locally posted viewpoint or monastery charges, water and lunch. Ask at junctions rather than assuming every road marked Nagarkot reaches your intended trail.
Check weather and local access on the day. Take water, food, grippy shoes, a charged phone and an offline route. Keep a daylight margin and bring all rubbish home. Maps below locate the area; they are not trail-navigation tracks.
