About this spot
DAY HIKE · KATHMANDU RETURN · NO OVERNIGHT REQUIRED
Research checked: 2026-09-15. Suggested plan for Nepali travellers, not a tour booking or live route-status report.
Choose this for the forest as much as the summit. Phulchowki forms the high southern valley rim, with vegetation changing during the ascent. It is a much longer commitment than a visit to the botanical garden below. [phulchowki]
ROUTE AND EFFORT
Route: Godawari / Godavari trailhead → Phulchowki summit → Godawari
Altitude: Roughly 2,760–2,780 m. Sources disagree between 2,762 m and 2,782 m; avoid treating either as survey precision. [phulchowki] [phulchowki-trail]
Walking: 6–8 hours return depending on the footpath/road combination and pace. Published distances vary (roughly 16–20 km); no single measured track is supplied here. [phulchowki] [phulchowki-trail]
Difficulty: Moderate–hard / strenuous: long uphill forest walking and a sustained descent. Allow a whole day including travel.
Transport allowance: Allow 60–90 minutes each way from central Kathmandu to Godawari; a bus transfer or peak-hour traffic can take longer.
DAY 1 - KATHMANDU TO THE TRAIL AND BACK
Times are planning windows. Traffic, gate hours, weather and the slowest walker determine the day; shorten the route if needed.
06:00–07:30 · Kathmandu to Godawari
Leave early with packed food. Confirm the actual hiking entrance and current access with local staff; a botanical-garden ticket is not proof of access to every hill route.
07:30–11:30 · Forest ascent
Use an established route with a guide or a companion who knows it. Short forest paths and the vehicle road are not equivalent in length; do not follow an unverified side trail.
11:30–12:15 · Summit break or earlier turnaround
Stop for lunch and views if weather allows. Respect any restrictions around summit installations. Turn earlier if your ascent is taking longer than expected.
12:15–16:00 · Descend to Godawari
Keep the return route clear and save energy for downhill footing. The slowest member should be comfortably off the forest trail before dark.
Late afternoon / evening · Return to Kathmandu
Meet your pickup in Godawari or allow extra time for local buses. This is a full-day outing, not a half-day plan.
GETTING THERE AND HOME
Confirm current bus connections to Godawari through the Lalitpur side before setting out. A group vehicle simplifies the early start and late return. Bring cash for any locally posted access/parking fee; a current Nepali total was not verified, so no price is invented.
SHORTER / ALTERNATIVE PLAN
For a slower group, set an earlier forest turnaround rather than forcing the summit. Do not replace the marked approach with shortcuts through unfamiliar woodland.
BEFORE YOU GO
Frolic Adventure explicitly warns that similar-looking side paths can lead hikers astray. Go with route knowledge, carry an offline map and allow for poor signal. Pack lunch, water and layers; wet leaves, fog or snow can make the return slower. [phulchowki-trail]
Check weather and local access on the day. Take water, food, grippy shoes, a charged phone and an offline route. Keep a daylight margin and bring all rubbish home. Maps below locate the area; they are not trail-navigation tracks.
