For a Nepali group, an overland Rara visit is a road trip with hiking at the destination, rather than eight continuous trekking days. Rara lies in Mugu inside the national park. [rara] This plan gives the lake two full days and splits the outward and return drives into overnight stages.

DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY
Suggested planning stages, not guaranteed departures. Walking hours and elevations are approximate; your pace, weather and road access may change the plan.
Day 1 - Kathmandu to Kohalpur or Surkhet
A very long bus or jeep day. Stop overnight; do not assume a mountain transfer will connect immediately. [rara-road]
Day 2 - Kohalpur/Surkhet to Manma
Continue up the Karnali corridor. Make Manma the overnight target and let road conditions determine timing. [rara-road]
Day 3 - Manma to the Rara roadhead
Drive via Nagma and Sinja toward Salleri/Milichaur as locally advised, then walk to your lodge. Expect most of the day in transit. [rara-road]
Day 4 - Rara lakeside day
Keep the day easy: shore walks, photography and time at the lake. Overnight near Rara again; optional boating depends on local operation. [rara]
Day 5 - Optional Murma Top walk
Arrange local guidance for an uphill viewpoint walk and return to the same lodge. Choose another lakeside day if tired or weather is poor. [rara-road]
Day 6 - Rara to Manma
Walk back to the agreed roadhead and travel downhill. Overnight in Manma; retain flexibility if the vehicle is delayed. [rara-road]
Day 7 - Manma to Surkhet/Kohalpur
Retrace the road with an overnight stop before the long Kathmandu leg. [rara-road]
Day 8 - Surkhet/Kohalpur to Kathmandu
Return home by bus or jeep. Reserve the entire day rather than quoting a fixed arrival hour.
PLANNING FROM KATHMANDU
Confirm vehicle type, actual passenger count, luggage space, meal stops and what happens if the road closes. Ask whether the quote includes both transfer directions and all lodge nights. Rara accommodation is limited, so book before starting. Carry cash, a warm layer, rain protection and a power bank. Do not plan the trip around guaranteed phone signal.
ENTRY AND IDENTIFICATION
Carry Nepali citizenship/national ID and check the Nepali entry category locally. Do not assume foreign-package permit charges apply. [fees]

ALTERNATIVE APPROACH
Flight alternative: travel Kathmandu-Nepalgunj, then a separately confirmed Talcha flight and walk to Rara. NTB describes this approach, but flight dates, seats and return connections need checking. Keep weather buffer days. [rara]
