About this spot

DAY HIKE · KATHMANDU RETURN · NO OVERNIGHT REQUIRED

Research checked: 2026-09-15. Suggested plan for Nepali travellers, not a tour booking or live route-status report.

A full walking day in protected forest on Kathmandu's northern edge. Nagi Gumba and Baghdwar make worthwhile stopping points even if the summit is out of reach. Views are weather-dependent and some summit surroundings are wooded. [shivapuri-local]

ROUTE AND EFFORT

Route: Panimuhan gate above Budhanilkantha → Nagi Gumba → Baghdwar → Shivapuri Peak → authorized return to Panimuhan
Altitude: About 2,732 m at Shivapuri Peak. [shivapuri]
Walking: Allow 6–8 hours on foot plus longer stops; published ascent estimates alone reach 4–5 hours. It is not a short monastery stroll. [shivapuri]
Difficulty: Moderate–hard / strenuous: a long climb with many steps and a tiring descent.
Transport allowance: Allow 45–90 minutes each way from central Kathmandu to the Budhanilkantha / Panimuhan approach, plus time to reach and register at the gate.

DAY 1 - KATHMANDU TO THE TRAIL AND BACK

Times are planning windows. Traffic, gate hours, weather and the slowest walker determine the day; shorten the route if needed.

Early morning · Kathmandu to Panimuhan
Arrange an early transfer via Budhanilkantha and arrive for the confirmed gate opening. Register, buy entry and ask staff about the Nagi Gumba–Baghdwar route, return options and latest permitted exit.

Morning · Nagi Gumba and the upper forest
Climb at the slowest person's pace. Keep the monastery stop short if continuing to the peak; the full ascent takes much longer than the drive.

Late morning / midday · Baghdwar and summit decision
Continue toward Baghdwar, then assess energy, weather and remaining daylight. Reach the peak only if there is time for a 2–3-hour descent plus contingency before the gate deadline.

Early afternoon · Begin the descent
Eat your packed lunch and return on the route agreed at entry. Turn around before the summit if progress has been slow; do not try an unfamiliar shortcut to make up time.

Before the park deadline · Exit and return to Kathmandu
Check out at the authorized exit and meet your ride. If the gate opens too late for your group's pace, choose Nagi Gumba as the day's endpoint instead.

GETTING THERE AND HOME

Travel to Budhanilkantha by bus or shared vehicle, then allow extra time uphill to Panimuhan. For a full summit day, a prearranged early drop-off and flexible pickup reduce waiting. Ask the gate about any route-specific guide requirements; do not apply foreign-tourist package rules to Nepali visitors by assumption.

PARK ENTRY FOR NEPALI VISITORS

The park lists NPR 100 for Nepali citizens per person, per day, per entry; this is entry only, not a trip budget. Carry Nepali identification and cash, and confirm the rate at the gate. [park-fees]
Use authorized gates/routes, retain your ticket and leave before sunset. No bathing in park water sources. Meat, alcohol, cigarettes, lighters and loudspeakers are prohibited. Confirm opening and last-entry times before leaving Kathmandu. [park-rules]

SHORTER / ALTERNATIVE PLAN

A Nagi Gumba out-and-back is the shorter fallback. Baghdwar adds a substantial climb; it is not a small detour from the gate.

BEFORE YOU GO

Carry sufficient drinking water, packed food, rain protection and a warm layer. Do not rely on stream water or a monastery refill being available. A local guide is useful for unfamiliar forest junctions, especially if returning on a different approved route.

Check weather and local access on the day. Take water, food, grippy shoes, a charged phone and an offline route. Keep a daylight margin and bring all rubbish home. Maps below locate the area; they are not trail-navigation tracks.
