About this spot
Access check, 14 September 2026: Kathmandu-Pokhara road disruption was reported; confirm the operating route before departure. [access]
Choose Tilicho for the lake and Manang landscapes without committing to Thorong La. This out-and-back route turns off the Annapurna Circuit near Manang. [tilicho] The itinerary adds intermediate nights on the lake approach and separates the return jeep ride from the Kathmandu bus. These are deliberate planning choices for a group leaving from home in Kathmandu.
TRIP AT A GLANCE
12 days, Kathmandu to Kathmandu.
Difficulty: Demanding: high altitude, exposed scree and a long lake day.
High point: Tilicho Lake, approximately 4,919 m.
Season: March-May and October-November; confirm snow and trail conditions.
Keep at least 2 extra days for road delays, snow or additional acclimatization.
DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY
Suggested planning stages, not guaranteed departures. Walking hours and elevations are approximate; your pace, weather and road access may change the plan.
Day 1 - Kathmandu to Besisahar
Take a morning bus or microbus; keep the whole day for road travel. Sleep in Besisahar and arrange tomorrow's shared jeep.
Day 2 - Besisahar to Chame
Travel by shared jeep on the rough valley road. Allow a full day with stops; sleep in Chame, about 2,670 m. [tilicho-stages]
Day 3 - Chame to Pisang
Walk roughly 5-6 hours. Choose a lodge around Lower Pisang, about 3,200 m; avoid adding a high side excursion on arrival. [tilicho-guide]
Day 4 - Pisang to Manang
Follow the valley route through Braga, roughly 5-6 hours. Sleep in Manang, about 3,540 m. [tilicho-guide]
Day 5 - Acclimatization in Manang
Stay a second night. If well, take a gentle Gangapurna-area walk and return to the same lodge; rest is part of the itinerary. [tilicho]
Day 6 - Manang to Khangsar
Walk about 3-4 hours; sleep near 3,740 m. A short stage gives the group time to adjust. [tilicho-guide]
Day 7 - Khangsar to Siri Kharka
Make a short uphill stage, roughly 2-3 hours, and sleep near 4,050 m. Confirm a lodge before leaving Khangsar. [tilicho-stages]
Day 8 - Siri Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp
Allow 3-4 hours across the exposed approach. Sleep around 4,150 m. Check conditions with a local guide before entering the scree section. [tilicho]
Day 9 - Tilicho Lake and back to Siri Kharka
Start early only if conditions permit. Visit the lake and descend via Base Camp; expect a demanding 7-9 hours. Sleep back in Siri Kharka. [tilicho]
Day 10 - Siri Kharka to Manang
Retrace the approach, about 4-5 hours. Sleep in Manang and reconfirm the downhill jeep. [tilicho-stages]
Day 11 - Manang to Besisahar
Use a prearranged jeep via Chame; allow the whole day. Overnight in Besisahar instead of relying on a tight bus connection.
Day 12 - Besisahar to Kathmandu
Take the daytime bus or microbus home. Let current road conditions determine the arrival time.
PLANNING FROM KATHMANDU
Ask for a per-seat shared-jeep quote and a room-plus-dal-bhat quote before agreeing. Carry cash from Kathmandu or Besisahar, a power bank and water treatment. Reserve Siri Kharka and Base Camp beds ahead in Dashain/Tihar travel periods. A local guide is a sensible choice for the scree traverse. This plan does not include a Mesokanto pass crossing or a drive straight to Manang followed by an immediate lake push.
ENTRY AND IDENTIFICATION
Carry Nepali citizenship/national ID and check the Nepali entry category locally. Do not assume foreign-package permit charges apply. [fees]
TRAIL NOTES
Rockfall, snow and ice can close the lake approach. Turn around if advised locally; an extra day is not a promise the route will open. [tilicho] Do not ascend with altitude symptoms; descend if worsening and seek medical help. [altitude]
